2.0. Summary

During the southern summer of 2006 we plan to operate this ecologically pure expedition by environmentally appropriate transport - the cycle-ark “PENGUIN-MC” with an international crew consisting of two people: L.Mikula (Ukraine) and J. Lejava (Georgia). The expedition is dedicated to the centenary of Antarctic Expeditions of Robert Scott (Great Britain), to the tenth anniversary of Ukrainian Antarctic scientific station “Academician Vernadskiy” and to the third International Arctic year. This document is prepared in accordance to the obligations contained in the Protocal on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty and it is our conclusion that the proposed activity will have less than a minor or transitory impact on the Antarctic environment , its flora and fauna.

3.0. Itinerary
The intention of the proposed expedition is to depart from Ushuaia (Argentina) or from Punta Arenas (Chile) and to sail to the Antarctic Peninsula, Weddel sea, by any passing, tourist or charter ship (25 october 2006 to 5 november 2006, the route itself is supposed to be started beginning from 1-10 november ) On arrival at the coast the expedition gets to the area of the polar station “Hally” (Great Britain) or “Belgrano-2” (Argentina).

1-4 day Final packing and acclimatization.
5-20 day Getting to the plateau up to 80 degrees north latitude, 15 degrees west longitude (see “Map” in the section 4.0. below)
21-50 (65) day Route up to the South pole along the meridian of 15 degrees.
Trip ending - returning from the polar station “Amundsen-Scott” (USA) by air.

4.0. Map

5.0. Transport and description of the proposed activity

Our plan is to realize an ecologically pure South pole expedition by environmentally appropriate transport .
Cycle-Ark “PENGUIN-MS” was constructed as a vehicle with pedal (cycle) drive based on a man’s muscle strength of a man and able to use natural strength of wind with a help of sail.
Depending on conditions and state of the Arctic surface “PENGUIN-MS” has three modes of motion available:
- “Cycle-mobile” mode. Four double-tyred wheels make riding possible on condition of relatively plain and molded enough snow or icy surface. In case of need the driving (front) wheels can be clothed in paddle-wheels. Installation of the sail on the mast will be weather dependent (on condition of a favourable wind).
- “Mechanical sledge” mode. “PENGUIN-MS” can move all along the same surface (see “cycle-mobile” mode above) and also by the snow that is deep and soft. For lack of rear wheels the hull of the ark self-installes on multi-purpose three-stage skids. The first stage represents a metal skid destined for hard (molded) snow and ice, the second and the third (the last one is a ski-stage) are correspondingly 140 and 320 mm wide – all these stages provide good sliding irrespective of consistence of snow surface. Besides this mode lets the mast be particularly efficacious
- basic primary mode of moving - “Sledge”. This mode intends the removal of all the wheels and in that way the ark transforms into an ordinary sledge. Disposing of multi-purpose skids it can move all over any winter surface with a help of the muscle strength of the crew (they can tow the ark as well as push it on) or using the sail (serving in a sense of iceboat).

5.1. Technical characterisics of the cycle-ark

Weigh (without equipment and the crew) – doesn’t overpass 1oo kg
Dimension:
Hight - 1.45 m (with the mast – 3.5m)
Length – 2.1 m
Breadth – 1.3 m
Speed gearing – 1:0.7; 1:1.5
Hull material - glass-fiber material with lagging
Design frost-resistance (nominal) - -550C
Rig:
Staysail (weatherproof) – 1.2 m2
Staysail – 2.4 m2
Spinnaker – 4.2 m2
Traveling speed:
by land – up to 12 km\h
by water – up to 9 km\h

6.0. Location

The ark, besides being universal transport, provides an accomodation for the crew. At any moment under adverse circumstances the crew has the possibility to find a shelter inside and to get warm (a heat-insulated interior of the ark will be warmed up quickly with a help of stearic candles or dry spirit), to take a short rest, to cook some hot meal ( we dispose the improved “Nansen’s Kitchen” equiped with universal burner working on the spirit or high-octane gasoline), moreover to bed themselves down ( convertible seats transform into comfortable full-length beds).

7.0. Purpose of the activity and likely ecological impact

This South Pole expedition by cycle-ark “PENGUIN-MS” is the first extremal travel in Antarctica by new vehicle based on a man’s muscle strengt. Like any other travel this one is a physical embodiment of man’s thirst for knowledge and perception in the effort to realize the essence of a human – his physical, physiological and psychological abilities.
Disposing of such a vehicle we avoid the necessity that ordinarily during an Arctic expedition used to make about 70% of every-days’ troubles–to search for a place to camp, to bivouac, to fix a tent protecting from the wind and so forth. It’s clear that every similar “camping” in Antarctica within certain limits has an impact on the snow and ice surfaces. In present expedition we have every intention of keeping our impacts of this travel to the absolute minimum – the weight of fully-equipped ark doesn’t overpass 200 kg, the ark with the crew weighs about 350 kg - this weight (that doesn’t differ from ordinary motorsledge) guarantees the conservation of surface almost unharmed.

7.1. Waste disposal

All the human wastes provided for in the expedition shall be packed in a special polyethylene containers and removed from the Antarctic area for disposal in the places destined for this purpose by “Treaty”.

7.2. Cumulative Impacts

The expedition will not use any fuel except the minimum needed for and keeping warm in the ark.
As the total amount of this fuel is very little and optimally limited (2 kg of stearic candles, 2 kg of dry spirit, 1 liter of liquid spirit, 1 liter of high-octane gasoline) the combustion products will constitute a very little cumulative impact. During the expedition no oil will be used because knots of the ark are coated with frost-resisting lubricant, hermetically covered by compressors. In that way by no chance the oil will impact the environment.

7.3. Conservation of Antarctic Flora and Fauna

We appreciate that Antarctica is a very special and fragile environment. We insist that no damage will be done to its flora and fauna during the expedition and no research effort dealing with its wildlife will be held .

7.4. Monitoring

Instructor of the expedition will monitor, at all times, the impact of our presence on the environment. An evaluation of any observed impact on the environment will be made by him in his report to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

8.0 Self-Sufficiency

The expedition will be fully self-contained with equipment, medical supplies and provisions suitable for nominal conditions of the travel – 65 days. On condition of resource saving if necessary the expedition can last about 90 days and practically can do without adressing to polar stations (in case of their refusal)

8.1. Material and technical provision

The cycle-ark “PENGUIN-MS” has passed through the winter testings and has proved to be reliable in operation and to have excellent characteristics of frost-resistance, design reliability, and a very good retention of heat inside the ark. Expedition is fully self-contained with combustible materials (for keeping warm inside the ark and for preparing meals), with oxygen caddies, with three times dubbed satellite devices and modes of emergency communication (a radio-station and a radio(-range) beacon); with a solar battery and a reserve energy supply. The crew is provided with polar clothes, footwear, skis and emergency tent.

9.0. Insurance

The expedition members are responsible without fail for their evacuation insurance in the event of accident or emergency situation. Whether Ukrainian whether Georgian insurance company will be provided the expedition by corresponding insurance policy of international standart. The polar stations in the course of the expedition (“Hally” Great Britain, “Belgrano-2” Argentina, “Patriot Hills” Chile, “Amundsen-Scott” USA) will be adviced opportunely in the event of an evacuation may be necessary.

10.0. Classifying the activity

It is our conclusion that the proposed activities will have less than a minor or transitory impact on the Antarctic Environment.

11.0 Profile of the crew

Leonid Mikula – expedition instructor, citizen of Ukraine, 64 years old, designer of the cycle-ark “PENGUIN-MS”, traveller with 40 years of experience, whose total length of travelling is more than 45000 km. Most of them were made alone by himself . He has designed a lot of unique inventions – vehicles based on a man’s muscle strength. Alpinist. Full member of Ukrainian Travellers Club “Kyivska Rous”
Jumber Lejava – expedition navigator, citizen of Georgia, 67 years old, outstanding Georgian traveller. He cycled more than 230 countries of the world during his world tour. Total length of cycling is 280000km. Reiterated record-holder of “The Guinness Record Book”, alpinist, full member of Ukrainian travellers Club “Kyivska Rous”

Leonidov!
Спасибо за интерес. Ты внимательно почитай этот форум и поймешь зачем я сделал свой веломобиль и почему назвал его ВЕЛОКОВЧЕГ, в т.ч. и в этой теме.
Или вот здесь:
viewtopic.php?t=18
